For over 85 years, the paradores of Spain have welcomed guests. Originally conceived in 1910 as a way to boost Spain’s tourism image, the first location opened in 1928. The hotels are often located in adapted castles, palaces, fortresses, convents, monasteries and other historic buildings. The paradores allowed old buildings to be re-purposed for modern usage. Along the Camino Francés, there are five paradores open to the pilgrim. There are even two in the town of Santo Domingo de la Calzada. You can expect magnificent reception areas with a tremendous sense of history and place. Well appointed rooms or suites with wonderful accompanying bathrooms. The paradores in Léon and Santiago de Compostela are especially steeped in tradition. The Hostal dos Reis Católicos in Santiago is one of the oldest continuously functioning hotels in the world and the ultimate reward for a long journey. The paradores have recognized the importance of those who walk the camino. A discounted price is available for all pilgrims on presentation of a valid credential or compostela. In addition, there are special pilgrim meals offered for only 15€ at the Enxebre restaurant in Santiago (beside the hotel) or for 18€ at the dining rooms in the other hotels. If a break from shared sleeping quarters is needed, the paradores offer a welcome resting spot at the end of your day’s walk.
