Pack a Question, Not Just a Bag

A full load of baggage

Preparation becomes pilgrimage when we consider not only what the body will carry, but what the heart is ready to release.

A Camino packing list is full of necessary decisions: shoes, layers, rain protection, first-aid supplies, water, and the weight of the pack itself. Each choice matters because your body will carry it, hour after hour.

There is another kind of preparation that deserves the same care. Before you leave, name what you are carrying inwardly. It may be expectation, grief, gratitude, fear, faith, or a question that has not yet found words.

Take three small cards. On the first, write: “What I carry.” On the second: “What I am willing to release.” On the third: “How I will care for myself.” Keep the cards somewhere simple. You do not need to read them every day. Let them be companions, not assignments.

As you test your shoes and adjust your pack, practise a gentle form of honesty. The strongest pilgrim is not the one who ignores pain or refuses help. Preparation includes learning to rest, tend your feet, change the plan, and receive kindness. Caring for the body is not separate from the spiritual journey. It is one way of honouring it.

THREE-CARD PRACTICE — What I carry. What I am willing to release. How I will care for myself.
